This fall, the Oakland Small Schools Foundation, in collaboration with the Nonprofit & Public Management Program at UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business, launched the third Oakland Small Schools Residency through which first- or second-year MBAs from Haas School of Business and MPPs from Goldman School of Public Policy are paired with a principal of an Oakland small school for a 6 month residency.

Residents have the opportunity to learn first hand the excitement, opportunity, and challenge of managing a public school in a low-income community. Residents provide value by delivering one or two projects for the principal such as analyzing student achievement data, planning events, developing fundraising campaigns or grants, implementing surveys, conducting focus groups, preparing presentations, and/or becoming involved in another aspect of the school as requested by the principal.

Benefits for UC Berkeley Students:

  • Apply your skills to strengthen a school with high potential to level the academic playing field for kids growing up in a low-income community.
  • Develop a better understanding of both the challenges facing schools in low-income areas and some of the most promising innovations.
  • Jumpstart your career search by networking with local & national education leaders.
  • Add another high-value project to your repertoire to discuss in interviews this spring.
  • Participate in periodic meetings with other residents and top educational leaders to discuss themes in education reform and share best practices for an effective residency.
  • Receive credit toward your degree

Residents spend between 4-8 hours per week working on their projects or participating in school site activities during the spring semester.

Project scales and timeframes vary - some need to be completed early in the spring semester, others carry-over through the end of the school year. We work with accepted applicants to find a project that fits.

During the 2007-08 school year, we have placed pairs of business school residents in two schools.
